Remove Write Protection In Simple Steps


While Formatting the corrupted Pen Drive/SD Card we often get a warning like “The Disk Is Write Protected”, in this article I will help you with the simple steps how to remove write protection and format the USB/SD card.

Important Note: Before formatting the write protected USB/SD card, it necessary to take a backup of that card. Because in the following steps it will remove all the data from that card.

Steps to remove write protection

Time needed: 5 minutes.

The following Steps we will using cmd command prompt. But before we start we have to add a StorageDevicePolicies folder to the computer.

  1. Step 1

    Click Start, Type Run in the search and press enter.
    After in the Run search box type regedit and press enter.

  2. Step 2

    Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
    Now inside the Control directory Edit>New>Key press enter, name that new directory to StorageDevicePolicies press enter.

  3. Step 3

    After that right click on the newly created folder StorageDevicePolicies
    then new>DWORD (32-bit) Value press enter, after that name it WriteProtect press enter.

  4. Step 4

    After that double click on the WriteProtect then on the popup set the value data to 0 and press ok, then close the regedit

  5. Step 5

    Again click on Start, then type Run, then type diskpart on the search tab.
    Press enter, this will take you to the cmd diskpart command. After that plug your write protected USB/SD Card.

  6. Step 6

    Type list disk and press enter.

    Now, select the write-protected disk by typing select disk 1 and press enter. In my case, it is disk 1.

    After selecting the disk, type attributes disk and press enter.

    In my case you can see the current read-only state: Yes. We have to make that changes to current read-only state: No
    Type attributes disk clear read-only and press enter

    To check whether the write protect is removed or not again type list disk and press enter. Then select disk 1 press enter. Then remove the USB/SD card from the computer.

  7. Final step: Format the Disk

    Replug the USB/SD card.
    Now navigate to the write protected drive and then format the drive it will take 1 to 2min time. Don’t close the window until it finishes the task.
